Going back to school is always a little nerve wracking. Will my child be happy? Will my child have a nice teacher? Will my child have friends in the class? But this year, the question looming large is: will my child get the swine flu?! Our advice? Stay informed.
Influenza, aka “the flu” is thought to spread mainly person-to-person through coughing or sneezing of infected people. So have your children take simple, everyday actions to stay healthy. Covering his/her nose and mouth with a tissue when they cough or sneeze helps stop the spreading of germs.  Have them wash their hands often with soap and water – if they can sing a whole round of Happy Birthday To You while doing it, those germs won’t stand a chance! Even better, send them to school with some anti-bacterial wipes. Throw them in their lunchboxes and backpacks, or alcohol-based hands sanitizers are also effective.  Have them avoid touching their eyes, nose or mouth, especially after recess or gym.
Most important, if your child seems sick, keep her home from school! If you have a meeting that day, reschedule. A coffee date with friends can wait. We know it’s not easy, but by following these simple tips, maybe (just maybe!) you’ll spare yourself and your children a bout with the flu!
